Thursday Mar 07, 2019
Mercury Retrograde gets lots of attention every time it puts the brakes on, usually of the “Oh no!” variety. Today Diane focuses on its symbolic history, a few astronomical facts, and the gifts— yes, gifts!— it has to offer, as we complete this week’s 3-part episode trilogy of new ways to look at Mercury Retrograde. Relax, enjoy, make these gifts your own, and let us know what you discover.
Your Wow Whispering host Diane has been fascinated since childhood with all things skyward, and today we expand upon this in our series, The Skies Above.
In this series we honor two traditions which were originally united as one: Astrology and Astronomy. Both derive purpose from seeking to understand the nature of life through explorations beyond Earth. From symbolism to science, humanity wants to know more, ever more, about our place in the cosmos. You are invited to explore with us.

14: How Far Is Far? The Skies Above with Diane A. Curran
Monday Feb 25, 2019
Monday Feb 25, 2019
How Far Is Far? Your Wow Whispering host Diane has been fascinated since childhood with all things skyward, and today we expand upon our new podcast series, The Skies Above.
In this series we honor two traditions which were originally united as one: Astrology and Astronomy. Both derive purpose from seeking to understand the nature of life through explorations beyond Earth. From symbolism to science, humanity want to know more, ever more, about our place in the cosmos.
Today, we’ve got the inventions that lets us leap ahead, as science has allowed us to observe, measure and calculate what’s in our skies, and then to travel beyond what the earliest scientists may ever have dreamed was possible.
Links to what we highlight in today’s podcast includes:
(1) Who invented the telescope?
Jacob Metius from The Netherlands started it all around 1600.
Hans Lipperhey also Dutch, was hired by the Hague to refine it.
Galileo Galilei, an Italian professor and experimenter at the University of Padua, was the third proponent of this new tool, and as a professor, spread the fame and refinements possible with this marvelous new tool, so he is often mis-credited with the original invention.
https://history.aip.org/exhibits/cosmology/tools/tools-first-telescopes.htm
The 10 biggest telescopes in our modern world are listed here. The Gran Telescopio Canaria (CTC) in Spain is 34 feet (10.,4 meters) across, an amazing feat.
https://www.space.com/14075-10-biggest-telescopes-earth-comparison.html
(2) How far is far? Consider the Light-Year.
The light-year is a measure of distance, not time. It is the total distance that a beam of light, moving in a straight line, travels in one year. To obtain an idea of the size of a light-year, take the circumference of the earth (24,900 miles), lay it out in a straight line, multiply the length of the line by 7.5 (the corresponding distance is one light-second), then place 31.6 million similar lines end to end. The resulting distance is almost 6 trillion (6,000,000,000,000) miles!
https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/Numbers/Math/Mathematical_Thinking/how_long_is_a_light_year.htm
I learned in school that light travels at 186,000 mile per second, and that nothing travels faster than light. Do you believe that? Listen in for what we reveal about that statement in the podcast!
(3) Are “computers” people or machines?
A surprising answer to that lies at the heart of the fascinating movie “Hidden Figures” (2015, available on Apple’s iTunes and Amazon Prime), which tells the story of early NASA efforts and the pioneering contributions made by three gifted black women:
Katherine Goble Johnson, mathematician
Dorothy Vaughan, mathematician and supervisor
Mary Jackson, mathematician and engineer.

13: The Skies Above Intro with Diane A. Curran
Tuesday Feb 19, 2019
Tuesday Feb 19, 2019
Your host Diane has been fascinated since childhood with all things skyward, and today we briefly introduce a new segment feature on our podcast, The Skies Above.
We will honor two traditions which were originally united as one: Astrology and Astronomy. Both derive purpose from seeking to understand the nature of life through explorations above and beyond Earth.
Humanity is often mesmerized by our local Sun and Moon, the planets we can see with the naked eye, those we later learned inhabit our solar system (thanks to the invention of the telescope) and of course stars, constellations, and heavenly bodies of all sorts, including our modern astronauts and spacecraft vehicles.
NASA stands for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The word Aeronautics derives from the Greek words for "air" and "to sail.”
Perhaps NASA was thinking of the Astrological sign Aquarius, whose constellation symbolizes a sky traveler pouring energy out into the cosmos. Aquarius is known for invention, innovation, outside-the-box thinking, and ideas.
NCGR stands for the National Council for Geocosmic Research, dedicated to h the highest standards of astrological education and professional skills for professional astrologers.
With left brain science, and right brain poetic symbolism, we human beings carry on ancient traditions and a modern calling to discover, learn, test, understand, and interpret life in the universe through endless inquiry and exploration.
Join us as we expand this special Wow Whispering series with musings, conversations, and guests drawn from both Astrology and Astronomy, and all they'll reflect of our insatiable human appetite for cosmic communication.

Sending Humans Out into Solar System: Moon to Mars
Building on this growing scientific knowledge of our solar system, NASA is developing the most advanced rocket and spacecraft to lead the next steps of human exploration farther into space than we have ever traveled before.
International Space Station
Humans are already living and working off the Earth in the one-of-a kind research laboratory in microgravity. The International Space Station serves as a blueprint for global cooperation and scientific advancements, a destination for growing a commercial marketplace in low-Earth orbit, and a test bed for demonstrating new technologies. Research on the station is the springboard to NASA’s next great leap in exploration, sending humans into deep space
